Personal Description:
Clarissa is a dedicated educator and violinist with a personal mission to inspire positive change in both music and music education industries. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, she worked with The Music Circle in Singapore teaching both violin and musicianship classes where she had the opportunity to develop her teaching using a variety of methods like Kodaly, Rolland and Dalcroze.
Clarissa is currently pursuing postgraduate study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where she is researching healthier
methods in violin performance and education, with an emphasis in injury prevention. She believes that music is about community building and that music education is not about chasing certification or awards, but nurturing a lifelong love for music. When she is not teaching, Clarissa plays with various groups and ensembles across Scotland. Besides music, Clarissa enjoys hiking, knitting, gardening and is a busy cat/bird mum. She is passionate
about animal welfare and volunteers with Parrot Trust Scotland.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught a variety of ages in both individual and group settings. Besides teaching the violin, I particularly enjoy teaching musicianship skills.
I believe music should be a shared experience and so have worked with students in various ensemble sizes and combinations. I strongly believe in holistic learning and prioritising the student's wellbeing, as such I am working towards developing my teaching method to incorporate the Alexander Technique and Body Mapping.
My qualifications include a Bachelor's degree from the Royal Academy of Music and a teaching licentiate from the Royal Academy of Music. I have also been a Senior Music Educator at The Music Circle (Singapore). I am currently pursuing my Masters in Performance and Pedagogy and plan to take on Alexander teacher training in the near future.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe playing an instrument is not just about executing what is on the page, but is a complex combination of skills and is a great way to build character. To have the ability to play an instrument however you wish, is essentially very powerful and rewarding.
My goal as a teacher is to make learning fun and effective and help you achieve your goals.
My teaching method focuses on holistic learning and injury prevention. I place great emphasis on helping students achieve a comfortable set up and playing in the most tension free way possible as to prevent injury and discomfort in the long-term. My lessons not only focus on the violin but include musicianship skills so that students are well equipped in their learning. As learning is much more effective when students enjoy themselves and are engaged, my lessons often include a variety of activities like games, flashcards and musical movement.
Lesson durations are according to the student's focus and stamina, ranging from 30 mins to an hour.
I have 6 years of experience teaching both group and individual lessons, and am happy to work with children 6 and up, as well as adults.
