Personal Description:
Clarissa is a dedicated educator and violinist with a personal mission to inspire positive change in both music and music education industries. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, she worked with The Music Circle in Singapore teaching both violin and musicianship classes.
Clarissa is currently pursuing postgraduate study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where she is researching healthier
methods in violin performance and education, with an emphasis in injury prevention. She believes that music is about community building and that music education is not about chasing certification or awards, but nurturing a lifelong love for music. When she is not teaching, Clarissa plays with various groups and ensembles across Scotland. Besides music, Clarissa enjoys hiking, knitting, gardening and is a busy cat/bird mum. She is passionate
about animal welfare and volunteers with Parrot Trust Scotland.
Tutoring Experience:
I am currently an Upper Strings Musician at Big Noise Govanhill and a Deputy Lecturer at RCS Junior Department.
I have worked with children as young as 6 years old up to adults, in both individual and ensemble settings.
My qualifications include a Bachelor's degree from the Royal Academy of Music and a teaching licentiate from the Royal Academy of Music. I have also been a Senior Music Educator at The Music Circle (Singapore).
Tutoring Approach:
I believe playing an instrument is not just about executing what is on the page, but is a complex combination of skills and is a great way to build character. To have the ability to play an instrument however you wish, is essentially very powerful and rewarding!
My lessons are fun and creative, using a variety of activities and games to tailor learning to you. Alongside violin technique, I include musicianship skills so that students are well equipped in their learning. My teaching method is inspired by Kodaly, Rolland, Mimi Zweig and Dalcroze.
I focus on holistic learning and place great emphasis on helping students achieve a comfortable set up and playing in the most tension free way possible. To prevent injury and discomfort in the long-term, I incorporate the Alexander Technique and Body mapping in my teaching.
Lesson durations are according to the student's focus and stamina, ranging from 30 mins to an hour.
