Personal Description:
Olivia is a media/film composer and pianist of mixed British and Japanese heritage. She studied at the Purcell School of Music, the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria and is currently at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She has experience in improvisation (jazz and freestyle) as well as classical music and has performed as a pianist and chamber musician at various venues, including the Wigmore Hall and Southbank Centre. Her love for film and narrative led her to pursue a path within film music composition, and in 2022 she was offered a place at GSMD and in 2024 graduated with distinction (Masters of Composition). She is currently studying there as a Junior Fellow in the Electronic Music department. Her music, while strongly influenced by her classical background, covers a wide spectrum of genres and is driven by her love of storytelling.
Additional Info:
Olivia has written music for short film and animation projects by the Unversity of Arts London (Central Saint Martins), Middlesex University, California State University Long Beach (USA), Maryland College of Art (USA), and the London Film Academy. Films she has scored for have become part of the Official Selection for several film festivals in 2023, including Lift-Off Global Network Film Festival, Centre Film Festival, ED Indie Film Festival, Nosebleeds Film Festival and the Sweaty Eyeballs Animation Festival.
She has written music commissioned and performed at the National Gallery in London, and the Barbican Centre for their annual 'Silent Cinema & Live Music' event, this year for the 1926 French silent film Menilmontant. Her music was also showcased at the Bauhaus Festival, performed and recorded by the Bauhaus Band, and conducted by saxophonist and composer John Harle.
Tutoring Experience:
Olivia has over three years of teaching experience in private one-to-one tuition as well as assisting in group-led music projects for university students at the Guildhall School of Drama as a postgraduate and junior fellow.
Tutoring Approach:
Olivia teaches students of all ages and is open to teaching, as well as piano, composition, music theory and singing. She offers help and support through ABRSM Grade exams but is open to teaching away from an exam-focused set-up as well. She specializes in classical music but also beginner jazz levels and beyond into other genres of music (film music/pop music). Olivia is focused on offering personal teaching which is flexible and caters to each student and what they wish to achieve or develop through lessons, whether that is building confidence as a performer or developing their musical knowledge and independent learning skills.
