Personal Description:
Hi there, my name is Richard and I am a doctoral student at the University of Oxford. My six years at Oxford have taught me so much and improved my capabilities as a student beyond what I thought possible - an experience which is open to you through my tutoring! Read on if you’re interested…
The reality is every student that I have tutored has seen their scores increase, often with rather dramatic results. Whether you are looking to pass a challenging module, struggling with turning a 2:2 into 2:1, or trying to achieve a first-class honours degree, I can help you to meet your goals and ensure that your hard work pays off. I work with students who feel their course is confusing, individuals who have experienced challenges with their studies and feel frustrated by their marks, and those who wish to go beyond what they thought was possible. Ultimately, I will do my best to support you for what is a very reasonable price (especially compared to other tutors who simply don’t have my experience or two Oxford degrees in the bag - I’m not saying you shouldn’t work with anybody else but please don’t overpay for tutors who simply aren’t worth it!). So, if you wish to benefit from my experience and support - as quite a few others already have - then fire me a message and let’s see about getting started.
* Fully Garda vetted and also have an enhanced DBS clearance in the UK.
** I split my time between Oxford and Ireland, so meeting online or in person should prove no problem.
*** I am happy to provide special offers for dissertations and theses - dm me for more information.
Tutoring Experience:
In Ireland, I have 5+ years experience in tutoring students from: Trinity (ENGLISH, CLASSICS, HIST. POL, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, LAW; PHILOSOPHY); UCD (ENGLISH, ECONOMICS); DCU (ENGLISH, PRIMARY ED… GEOGRAPHY); QUB (PHILOSOPHY, THEOLOGY); and UCL (R.E… PHILOSOPHY).
Outside of Ireland, I have 5+ years experience in tutoring students from: University of Oxford (ENGLISH, ART HISTORY, CLASSICS, HISTORY, PPE, PSYCHOLOGY); University College London (BUSINESS, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS); Vrije University Amsterdam (HISTORY, MODERN POLITICS, GLOBAL RELATIONS); and Yale University (ENGLISH LITERATURE).
Additional tutoring for university students (which has proven extremely popular) has focused on improving essay-writing skills at any level, from beginner to advanced. I have just submitted a thesis of 100,000 words in Oxford with an acclaimed professor and am more than qualified to help you learn how to write your own essays or dissertations in a simple but effective manner!
Lastly, I am very happy to work with students on a one off basis, typically proof reading their thesis for final year submission (whether undergraduate or post-graudate). I have recently finished proofing theses for students from Oxford, Trinity College Dublin, University of Edinburgh, Vrije University (Netherlands) and Yale (USA). Please feel free to message me for further details.
Approach to Grinds:
In terms of my tutoring style, I am friendly and fun - remember that I am still a student myself so I know how it feels! However, I won’t let you get distracted from your studies and in particular the goals you want to achieve – that’s why you pay me right? My record at lifting grades is outstanding, and I will always ensure that my tutoring helps you to understand exactly what is expected of you. This is critical when it comes to a degree, as there are many students who produce great work but receive poor marks - simply because they don’t fully understand what is expected of them from the examiners and marking conventions (which, in my experience, is mostly because this was never explained to them as part of their course).
Usually, I begin with listening to you and your story. Your degree, why you are studying, how your grades have been and where you wish them to be – all of this matters because it is important for me to understand who you are as a person. These details help you to be honest about what you want and support me as I try to drive your performance up in a short space of time. Following this, I will examine a short piece of your work, e.g… reading a sample in order to see where I can help you. At this stage, you won’t have paid anything to me (just the finders fee which I receive nothing of!), I would never charge for this initial tutoring as it’s simply unfair to you. There may be some students who, for whatever reason, I don’t think I can offer the right support to and it simply wouldn’t be fair to charge you for any initial work. For those that I do choose to keep working with, I have found that the first session and my subsequent reading of your work helps to set the standard for what we can expect - from that initial, free meeting, we can work out how often you wish to meet etc.
In our subsequent sessions we will then begin working on what you need the most support with. Whether it be: improving your writing style / structure and planning / answering precise research questions / closer analysis of sources and bringing your papers up a few levels with extra tweaks / grinds in specific subject areas; each are straightforward for someone of my level and I will ensure that we both see an impressive amount of change in a relatively short period. All of this will be done in discussion with you, and it will of course be planned to suit you and your specific needs. This includes my commitment to support you in relation to: essay reading, proofing and correcting, and of course grinds in your chosen subject. I can do all of these, or a mixture, it truly does depend on what you feel is best suited to you. Any more info you may need, please just get in touch!
