Personal Description:
I am a freelance conference interpreter and translator with an MA in Conference Interpreting from NUI Galway. My working languages are French and Spanish. My undergraduate degree is in Applied Languages from the University of Limerick in Ireland where I obtained a 1.1 first class honour. My majors were French and Spanish and I also had a minor in Japanese. I was an A student at second level, and studied both French and Japanese for leaving certificate. My entire working career has been centred around languages and communication, and for the past five years I have been working freelance as a translator, interpreter and language tutor.
Tutoring Experience:
I worked teaching English as a Foreign Language in Japan for 8 months, I taught all age groups, from kindergarten age right up to senior high school (3-18 years). I have been a freelance language tutor for almost ten years offering one-to-one grinds, as well group classes to adults and school students. Long before the pandemic forced the world to go online, I have been primarily offering online grinds, which have been very successful: the majority of my students prefer the convenience and flexibility of online lessons.
Approach to Grinds:
Language study requires a different approach to most other academic subjects. For some, languages can be a challenge but with the correct approach they can be easily conquered. I focus on individual students needs and requirements, some students have a real interest in furthering their language knowledge to acquire top results, while some students aim to pass the exams successfully so they can progress on to focus on other areas of study. I tailor my grinds accordingly; I like to decide on specific goals and targets with the student, so we can make an effective plan together to achieve them.
Everything in life requires effort, and you will not achieve results without hard work, but I believe in studying efficiently. Learning time-management, prioritising and focusing your study, and learning good exam strategy is extremely important.
I work hard in the hope that my students will reach their potential and be proud of their efforts, and I hope that I can instil even a tiny bit of the love of languages in them that I have myself!
