Personal Description:
Hi there! My name is Laoise. I have been studying Japanese for 13 years, and received my JLPT N2 qualification in January 2022. In March 2020 won the 18th JLTI National Japanese Speech Contest. I have studied in Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto in 2016, and in Meiji Academy in Fukuoka in 2019. I have travelled extensively throughout Japan, visiting 9 cities, and would love the chance to share my love of the Japanese Language with you. I took the Leaving Cert Japanese exam myself (as an extra subject) in 2014, and achieved an A2 grade.
I studied Drama and Theatre Studies in Trinity College Dublin (2014-2018) where I trained in workshop facilitation, and have worked as in actor for 16 years, and so naturally I have a love of Japanese films and anime. As well as Japanese language teaching, I work as a theatre-maker, making bilingual (English and Japanese) plays that celebrate both languages and cultures.
Tutoring Experience:
I trained in workshop facilitation in Trinity College Dublin, and have spent a number of years as a Drama Teacher - so I'm well-versed in lively, fun classes that'll keep you interested!
I also have a GA Level 5 Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language with specialisms in Business English, One-to-One teaching and Online teaching, so I have a confident grounding in teaching methodologies and specifically in private online tutoring.
Approach to Grinds:
I'm here to support you, and so can help you with whatever you're feeling unsure about. I can most efficiently work with you if you give me as much information as possible about yourself: what level your Japanese is, what you like/dislike about learning Japanese, what you feel confident/unsure about, and why you want to learn Japanese (this is particularly important, so we can figure out fun ways for you to improve, rather than just learning off lists of vocab and grammar!). I am not a native Japanese speaker, but I think this actually gives me an advantage in that I have extensive experience as learner: being in exactly the position you are in. I understand how to figure out Japanese from an English-speaker's perspective, which will be useful in assisting you on your language journey.

Laoise's Feedback

What sets Laoise apart is her commitment to ensuring that the learning doesn't conclude when the class ends. Without fail, she sends follow-up emails detailing the content covered during the session, with vocabulary lists and relevant tests. These materials have proven to be a great resource for my review of the lessons.
Laoise's dedication goes above and beyond, as she consistently goes the extra mile by sending additional PowerPoint presentations and any extra materials she has on hand that are useful. This thoughtful approach not only enhances the learning experience but also demonstrates her genuine passion for helping students succeed.
I recommend Laoise to anyone seeking a Japanese tutor who not only imparts knowledge effectively but also provides ongoing support beyond the classroom. Her teaching style, coupled with the wealth of resources she provides, has significantly contributed to my progress in Japanese, and I am truly grateful for the exceptional guidance she continues to offer. Since starting lessons with Laoise, my university tests have consistently improved.
Although I have put in a lot of foundations on my own, these would be useless without Laoise's phenomenal and exceptional ability to not only teach new material but to very naturally and comfortably guide me to find answers on my own.
It would be unfair to describe Laoise's ability in Japanese as a gift as it is very clearly from a serious amount of hard work and effort.
I would certainly recommend Laoise to anybody who is considering taking the next step in their japanese learning journey as I could not have achieved the JLPT N4 without her help.
