Personal Description:

Hello! I am an Phd Student at Columbia University in the Philosophy of Mind. I am originally from Galway, Ireland. I received my BA in French and Psychology at Trinity College, Dublin, and my MA in Philosophy at the ENS in Paris. Then I came to New York to pursue my PhD. I am passionate about philosophy and teaching it! My areas of competence include but are not limited to: Philosophy of Mind; the Philosophy of Cognitive Science; The Philosophy of AI; Early Modern Philosophy, the Philosophy of Psychology, and biomedical ethics. I am also happy to tutor around the 'methodological' aspects of philosophy.

Tutoring Experience:

I have 4 years teaching experience in Philosophy as a Teaching assistant at Columbia University. I have also taught English as a Primary Instructor in France for one year before beginning my PhD. I have taught grinds at the Junior Cert and Leaving Cert level in Irish & French for several years during my undergraduate; and I have lead discussion seminars and review sessions as a primary instructor in Philosophy. Next year, I will be a full time instructor at Columbia.

Approach to Grinds:

My approach to grinds is dynamic. I will listen to the individual needs of the tutee and what they are looking for help with in their studies. I can offer grinds that help understand philosophical content and any difficulties tutees might have with regards content; or help with more general stuff such as 'what is philosophy'? how to write a philosophy paper, how to structure a philosophy paper, and so on. Here are some reviews of me as a teaching assistant during my PhD program to give you an idea of what students think of my teaching:

''Ellen is so knowledgable and relatable and is great to talk to to brainstorm ideas and consider the ideas we talked about in class''

''Very helpful. She not only explained theories in great detail, but devoted time to help me understand''

''Ellen was very helpful during office hours in giving me feedback on both my discussion paper and final paper, where she very quickly understood the point I was trying to make and helped me flesh out the logic behind it''

''Ellen is exceptional. Very knowledgeable and responsive to questions''

''Knowledgeable and eager to help. Her teaching was exemplary. No weakness I am aware of''.

''Ellen is the best TA I ever had. She is very kind and helpful, her office hours are well accessible and she's very responsive to questions''
