Personal Description:
Ciao! Hola! Hello! I'm Ciana, a final-year European Studies student at Trinity College Dublin. I love languages and they have always been a passion of mine -- from my early memories of holidays in Spain to my first holy bite of pasta. I major in Spanish language, which is at a C1 level and, I minor in Italian, which is at a B2 level.
In addition, I have just spent the last year between the two countries, gaining fluency and cultural experience. I spent the summer au-pairing on the Adriatic Coast with an Italian family and the previous year at the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain, with both experiences being fully immersed in the native language. I studied entirely through Spanish, writing essays, giving oral presentations and more, learning the best and most native way to present ideas, thoughts and arguments (which would be very useful in the opinion piece!).
I am a huge fan of Spanish music and Italian literature and my favourites include L'Amica Geniale ('My Brilliant Friend') and The Marías. As a grinds teacher, I hope to share this passion for language and culture with you and show you the world of languages outside of exam papers and roleplays, of course, all the while, getting you that amazing grade!
Tutoring Experience:
I have a lot of experience in teaching and communicating languages to those on all different levels. I have helped out people going through the Leaving Cert with my notes and resources and they have found them incredibly useful! I got an A at Junior Cert level and a H1 at Leaving Cert so I know what it is like to be on the other side of the desk and I have learnt a lot about effective language teaching in my ten years as a languages student!
Moreover, I have spent a lot of time teaching the flip side, of English to those whose first language is Spanish or Italian. I feel I am an expert on the relationship between languages and English, and the vulnerable place that being a language learner can put you in! There are often many easy traps and pitfalls that come with translation and interpretation and I will use this perspective and experience to help you!
Approach to Grinds:
Languages aren't easy and I know with many other subjects on your mind, it is easy for them to not be a priority. I am here to help you in whatever capacity I can, assisting you from the level you are at to reach your goals. Both the Junior Cert and Leaving Cert courses are varied and have lots of differen**Contact Detail Removed**ments to them, from grammar to oral and listening comprehension exams. I will discuss with you if you want to focus on just one part, or if you want to do a mixture of each, and we can go from there!
It should be something fun and not stressful so we will make sure that it is as easy and accessible for you as possible. Languages are all about a little bit every day so I will provide you with notes and resources that will help you in learning more vocab, understanding verbal tenses and tricky bits of grammar that can bring you from one level to the next.
