Personal Description:
Xing Yi
I am a classically trained piano and violin teacher. I am also a HCPC registered music therapist. I have a Degree in Classical Music Performance (2013) and a Masters Degree in Music Therapy (2017). I also have a postgraduate diploma in Foundations of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (2020)
I have always been drawn to creative arts and involved myself in various musical activities such as singing in choir, playing in band and orchestra. I have been singing in a choir since 2009 and had involved in many choir competitions and performances in Malaysia, Thailand,Taiwan and England. Other than that, I also had a number of experiences playing violin in live band, orchestra and musical show. I had participated in Cambridge University Music Society Symphony Chorus and Symphony Orchestra. Music brings me joy and happiness and I believe that everyone, regardless the age and gender, is able to enjoy the fun of music as long as they are ready to commit to the learning.
Other experiences: I offer music therapy to people with special needs and disabilities. I also offer music therapy for mental health care such as depression and anxiety; and for dementia care.
Tutoring Experience:
I started to teach since 2009. I have taught in a variety of setting such as individual piano, individual violin, string ensemble, group music theory, group aural, music for very young children as well as classroom music. I teach adults and children. I am familiar with ABRSM and TRINITY music syllabus; from Grade 1 to 8. I am able to prepare students for the exam if interested. I also teach those who wish to learn to play the piano/violin for self-interest, whether it's classical or popular music.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe music is more than just to learn to play an instrument, but also, to explore, to understand and to learn to appreciate different musical styles. Therefore, I enjoy sharing a variety of musical knowledge with my students; such as playing techniques, music theory, aural, music history and etc. The joy and excitement of teaching grants me the feeling of happiness when I am able to watch my students mature in their musical talents and personality through music learning.
I believe that practice between lessons is essential. Parents/care givers's help and support in encouraging their children to practice will maximize their learning efficiency.
