Personal Description:
My name is Vince. I have many years experience playing guitar and mandolin in bands, folk and ceilidh dance groups, churches and choirs.
I have an enhanced criminal records check updated annually, providing reassurance in my professional work with children and adults, including those with vulnerability and disability.
My taste in music includes folk, rock and blues, traditional Northumbrian and Celtic, Americana and music with a spiritual dimension.
I am experienced in various guitar and mandolin music styles and techniques as well as bass guitar, banjo and ukulele. This includes acoustic and electric instruments, finger style playing, a developing ability in formal classical guitar playing etc… I sing in a community choir as well as leading a small choir of my own. Therefore the ability to link development of singing and music-reading techniques to instrumental playing is another aspect of my interest and teaching capacity.
My musical skills continue to develop by completing further advanced guitar grades and by the teaching of my students. I successfully completed a Community Music facilitator's course at the Sage, Gateshead in 2012.

3.I produce notes, videos and written exercises for all students to support every lesson I deliver and at no extra cost. Students are able to prepare videos for feedback if desired.
4. Visual learning, music notation and tablature are tailor-made to the student's individual requirements and ability

5 .Teaching adult groups and pairs of beginner and experienced guitarists.
6.Facilitating and teaching harmony singing to a community choir, providing guitar accompaniment.

From Natasha (/5): I've had a great four months learning mandolin with Vince. Coming to our lessons a complete beginner, Vince has truly helped me to harness a new, passionate hobby of mine. Lessons are tailored to what I've expressed interest in and to learning new techniques- such as tremelo, or hammer ons. So far, we've explored the musical genres of Bluegrass, Blues Spirituals, Scottish Jigs and English Folk- such a versatility in Vince's repertoire! Yet, lessons never feel rushed, and Vince delivers the hour with such a genuine love of music and breadth of knowledge (in music theory too!) , but everything is set in context, so nothing seems overwhelming or daunting. Plus, Vince is such a pleasant and patient person, so everything is taken at your speed and sometimes paired with interesting little tibit, anecdote or recommendation for an artist to listen to! Also, very responsive and timely- either email or in whatsapp.I also chose to learn with Vince because of his commitment to thorough and detailed notes. This works really well for me as he recaps each of our lessons, reviews what went well and what I could look at for future playing, and provides all the tablature and chords- even creating his own on the spot at times! This has really improved my playing, and in turn, my own confidence and commitment to the instrument. Thanks so much Vince!

I've found Vince to be encouraging and adaptable listening to my questions and concerns before adapting his lesson content accordingly. He has allowed me to fill in the gaps in my understanding and this has led to a much better grasp of the subject. I am really enjoying the lessons and feel I am already making progress with renewed enthusiasm.

He knows how to get the corporation of a teenage student who may or may not feel like being enthusiastic in every class. He pays attention to the interest of the student. Basically, he is an excellent tutor for kids of any age as he encouragong, patient and kind to his students.

From Nick (/5): I am a beginner/improver on the mandolin and have been having weekly lessons with Vince for just over 3 months. I am really pleased with how they're going. I was looking for a tutor for whom the mandolin was a primary instrument, which is the case with Vince, rather than an add-on. This has the benefit of allowing me to learn from the intuition he has developed from playing in solo and in bands over many years. While the lessons are relaxed, he pushes me along all the time, showing the possibilities that pieces offer for further development, even when some of the techniques will need a few months' more practice to become fluent. He is unfailingly encouraging and patient. I find each lesson fun and enlightening, and feel highly motivated to practice in between each session.
Being at different ends of the country, the lessons have all been over Zoom. I was a bit concerned about how that would actually work but have been very pleasantly surprised by their smoothness - even playing pieces together has been possible without any glitches.
In summary, I am very happy to recommend Vince unreservedly.

From Nick (/5): I undertook joint lessons along with a friend. We h ave found that Vince has been very helpful to us in learning how to play the guitar better. Firstly, he is very personable and pleasant to deal with. Secondly, he took a lot of time to get to know us and to find out what we wanted from the lessons in our (free) introductory lesson. This showed us how committed he was to helping us grow and improve. Finally, the lessons are very student/learner focused. Vince recaps progress in between sessions and is very flexible and willing to concentrate on what we want to learn and achieve rather than prescribing a path that he wants us to follow . This helps us to take ownership of our own learning and we both find that we are enjoying playing and improving. We would both thoroughly recommended Vince as a tutor.

From Caroline (/5): The lessons are at my pace and not a strict structured list of skills to learn. This allows me to improve before we move onto another skill and gives me a sense of achievement. (My previous teacher felt a need to teach me a new skill every week). He keeps records of the lessons which helps me to remember what we have covered (as there is a lot to take in at the time) and hence what to practice at home. Vince is patient and encourages me to be creative (which I’m not but I’m sure I’ll get there in the end).

From Gislaine (/5): For anyone searching for a teacher that will teach you based on your needs, then Vince is the perfect person. He structures my lessons based in his understanding of what I want. This means that I'm learning in a more organically natural way and fully Tailor made to how I absorb things. This makes the whole learning process more relaxed. I pick things up more easily via sound and vision and Vince has Registered that quite quickly by using images coupled with actions and not bogging me down with overt theory.
