Personal Description:
My name is Vince. I have many years experience playing guitar and mandolin in bands, folk and ceilidh dance groups, churches and in choirs.
I have an enhanced criminal records check updated annually, providing reassurance in my professional work with children and adults, including those with vulnerability and disability.
My taste in music includes folk, rock and blues, traditional Northumbrian and Celtic, Americana and also music with a spiritual dimension.
I am experienced in various guitar and mandolin music styles and techniques. This includes acoustic and electric instruments, finger style playing, some formal classical guitar playing etc… I also offer bass guitar and ukulele lessons… I sing in a community choir as well as leading a small choir of my own. Therefore the ability to link development of singing and music-reading techniques to instrumental playing is another aspect of my interest and teaching capacity.
References and Feedback about all aspects of my music experience and teaching are available via my profile.
Tutoring Experience:
CURRENT EXPERIENCE:
1. Teaching mandolin and guitar to adult and child beginner, intermediate and advanced level students.
2. I teach in a music school and primary school (years 4-6). I successfully completed a year-long Community Music facilitator's course at the Sage, Gateshead.
3. Teaching online via Zoom or face to face in my home or yours.
4. I produce notes, videos and written exercises for students to enhance lessons. Students are able to prepare videos for feedback if desired.
5. Visual learning, tablature and if desired music notation are provided for the student's individual requirements.
6.Teaching adult groups and pairs of beginner or experienced guitarists.
Tutoring Approach:
Music can be calming, creative and enjoyable at every stage in life!
For me it is a privilege and a pleasure to play and also to teach guitar and mandolin. Enjoyment, stimulation are key. Pressure does not aid learning!
I aim to agree individual goals with you
and help you to enjoy and develop your playing. I will review your progress regularly and prioritize your musical interests and needs, not mine!

Vince is beyond patient with me and is very generous with our time together
I'm loving learning, and hopefully improving, playing Mandolin.
Thank you Vince
What I want from the lessons and helps me build my understanding and skills step By step . I’d recommend him !
Following close to 2 years of tuition continuing through the pandemic Vince has shown himself to be knowledgeable, flexible and is a generally nice person to spend time with and learn from. He has allowed me to achieve my first music qualification (Acoustic Guitar Level 1) for which I received a Distinction and Vince was instrumental in preparing me for that exam. Vince's enjoyment in music and teaching is clearly evident and his ability to respond to the students direction requests rather than following a rigid programme was a key strength in my view. Highly recommended.
Being at different ends of the country, the lessons have all been over Zoom. I was a bit concerned about how that would actually work but have been very pleasantly surprised by their smoothness - even playing pieces together has been possible without any glitches.
In summary, I am very happy to recommend Vince unreservedly.

As a tutor I am engaged in a learning process too, always. It is genuinely enjoyable and creative for me too therefore to try and gauge what you want and need to learn.
And what steps we identify together - to get you most effectively to the next stages in your development as a guitarist and musician- is as you say an organic process, unique to you.
It draws on both of our individual talents and efforts very positively so far.
To add, after nearly a year of lessons with Vince, I am still enjoying them very much. He is very generous with his time and flexible which I need sometimes when I am travelling, or when life gets in the way of the routine. Luckily, he is also very patient!
