Personal Description:
In addition to my teaching and outreach, I am an active performer. I have played with esteemed ensembles, including the City of London Sinfonia, English Touring Opera, and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. My participation in international festivals such as the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and Hamamatsu Wind Academy has enhanced my performance skills, providing me with insights that I share with my students to inspire their development.
I am particularly proud of my work on projects such as Sound Young Minds with the City of London Sinfonia at Springfield Hospital and therapeutic music sessions at the Royal London Hospital. These initiatives, alongside my teaching and training, reflect my commitment to using music as a tool for personal growth and well-being.
Tutoring Experience:
I have over a decade of experience working with young people in diverse educational and outreach settings. My teaching journey began in 2011 in Hong Kong, where I taught at private schools, and has since expanded to roles in the UK with institutions such as Winchester College, Lewisham Music, and Kingston Music Service. I am committed to nurturing each student’s potential, tailoring my teaching approach to suit their individual needs and helping them achieve success. A notable achievement includes guiding one of my students to secure a music scholarship at Eton College and a place at a junior conservatoire.
As an Open Academy Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music, I delivered workshops for students with special educational needs at Woodlands Autism Centre and Robertson House (Pupil Referral Unit). Additionally, I participated in the Trainee Support Musicians Pathway with Wigmore Hall, where I gained experience in early years education and developed skills in delivering interactive and inclusive music sessions. My involvement with the Awards for Young Musicians further enabled me to support young people from underrepresented communities, fostering their creativity and confidence through collaborative music-making.
Tutoring Approach:
In my first lesson, I like to start with musical games as an icebreaker to create a relaxed and engaging environment while getting a sense of the pupil’s abilities. I also enjoy playing a duet with the pupil to evaluate their level and establish a connection through music. My lesson plans typically include music theory, foundational techniques, and tone quality, tailored to the student’s individual needs. I encourage open communication with both parents and pupils to ensure the lessons are as effective and enjoyable as possible. Above all, my goal is to help pupils find joy in playing music and inspire a lifelong love for it."
