Personal Description:

Tom is a Newcastle Upon-Tyne based multi-instrumentalist who specialises in fretted strings and is most often seen playing mandolin and tenor banjo, as well as tenor guitar and mandola.
Originally from Bath, he reached the final stages of the BBC Young Folk awards before moving to Newcastle in 2011 to study Folk and Traditional music at Newcastle University. After graduating in 2015, he won the renowned Danny Kyle award at Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow with his band, Pons Aelius. He has since completed a masters degree at Newcastle University, with a focus on composing and performing contemporary mandolin repertoire. With his two main bands, Pons Aelius and Assembly Lane, he has released numerous albums and performed at venues and festivals in the UK and Europe.

With a decade of experience teaching all of the instruments he plays, Tom is a dedicated music educator. Tom has a relaxed and friendly approach to music tuition, values the student's personal motivations for learning an instrument and seeks to establish goals that are unique to each student. Each learning programme is tailored to suit the style a student wishes to learn and cater to their preferred tuition methods. Tom teaches by ear, with standard notation and also TAB and often uses a blend of all three to maximise the learning experience.
