Personal Description:

I am a classical guitar, mandolin and theory of music teacher. After completing my degree in music from the University of Sydney and studies at the NSW Conservatorium of Music, I continued my classical guitar studies in Spain with José Luis González, a protégé of Andrés Segovia.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching music for 40 years and still enjoy it very much.

Tutoring Approach:

MUSIC THEORY: I particularly enjoy teaching Music Theory. For Grades 1 to 8, these days I use the Trinity College of Music Theory syllabus because it aligns more closely with the preparation needed for GCSE music and A-level music: it includes early training in music composition and an understanding of non-classical music genres. Trinity also offers Diplomas in music theory.

I am also very familiar with the ABRSM music theory syllabus Grades 1 to 8, if there is a strong preference for this.

CLASSICAL GUITAR: I am happy to teach all levels of classical guitar players from absolute beginners up to Diploma level, and am good at sorting out technique issues, improving the quality of tone production and increasing a player's expressiveness on the instrument. I am able to teach adults to read music on the guitar, even if they have felt it an impossible task in the past.

MANDOLIN: I usually teach classical mandolin.

Since COVID-19, I have found that most of my teaching has continued online, which I find works well. I am able to observe my student's at close range and they have a much closer view of what I am doing technically, than would occur if we were in the same room.

I am happy to accommodate adults with busy lifestyles, who might be interested in regular lessons but not perhaps on a weekly basis.
