Personal Description:
I CAN ONLY OFFER ONLINE LESSONS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
Hello, I'm Tan! I have been teaching singing and music theory since 2016.
I'm a classically trained singer (with a special passion for baroque) but my musical interests and teaching ability aren't limited to this style. I have taught both singing and theory students interested in pop, rock and musical theatre.
In addition to teaching, I continue to perform. My most recent performances include a cooperative lunchtime concert with classical guitarist Finlay Anderson at Greyfriars Kirk (Edinburgh) and several other solo recitals during my time at The University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College.
I am currently finishing a master's in music theory at McGill University (Montreal, Canada). My theory interests are in Eastern pop music (J-pop, K-pop, Canto-pop… ), transformational theory and semiology.

Tutoring Approach:
MUSIC THEORY:
My go-to teaching philosophy for music theory is "the theory you learn is the theory you need to achieve your musical goals," so relevance plays a big part in our lessons. I strongly advise all my students to complement the study of music theory with technology such as online resources that improve aural skills and sight-reading.
Learning resources provided. No prior knowledge of music theory is expected.
SINGING LESSONS:
Several students of all levels come to me in the hope to improve their overall confidence in singing. In return, they start singing notes they thought were otherwise impossible to sing and become more confident singers after learning all about their own instrument's anatomy.
