Personal Description:
ONLINE LESSONS AVAILABLE NOW!
I am a classically trained singer living in London with six years of conservatoire training. I teach singing of varying musical styles including classical, choral, musical theatre and pop/rock to all ages and abilities.
I am also a classical guitarist and teach beginner to intermediate guitar.
Tutoring Experience:
I have six years of singing teaching experience with pupils between the ages of four and fifty five. I have taught children one to one, in small groups, in larger groups for performing arts schools, and also for primary school classes. I have also taught adults with limited musical ability, and also semi professional singers who sing with auditioned choirs.
My private teaching has led to many exam passes with distinction from ABRSM and Trinity examining bodies, working on the fundamental aspects of the syllabus that will get high marks.
I trained as a singer in Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music where I obtained both my bachelor and master degrees. Whilst living in Manchester, I started gaining teaching experience with various companies and institutions. These include Chant Productions, the Carol May school of performing Arts, Mossley Hollins High School, and 13 Performing Arts.
Whilst living in London, I have been teaching the guitar mainly to children from six to thirteen who were beginners, I have also worked with adults who are more advanced. I teach privately, but also have worked for teaching agencies and local music services in London.
Tutoring Approach:
Singing (Classical) - As being a professional singer is my main occupation, it is my primary focus for teaching. My lessons will put you in the direction of healthy and confident singing for young and old. We will start with scales to warm up the voice and find ways to approach all vowels with similar styles. This mainly involves opening the mouth in a relaxed manner to relieve any tension. We will also work on how to sing whilst engaging your body to support the sound youre making, this includes breath control. After working on scales, we will apply what weve learned and work on new and familiar songs. The approach to all musical styles is similar in that we have to know exactly what notes we are singing and when, this in detail work will allow the singing to be more confident, particularly in pop music where sometimes the melody can be unclear.
Guitar - As a classical guitarist, I will promote the use of all right hand fingers (excluding the pinky) to play the guitar. This will allow the playing of a melody whilst being able to accompany the melody yourself. You will learn how to read music which will allow more productive individual practise. It also will open up a whole range of repertoire for you to play.
Singing (Musical Theatre) - The world of Musical Theatre and Opera are alike in many ways, and classical training before pursuing a Musical Theatre career has helped many Professional Musical Theatre singers of today.
Music Theory - With my professional career as a singer, I have exceptional knowledge of Music Theory, and this is something I would be able to teach up to ABRSM Grade 5 level. Working on the theoretical side of music will help gain musicality and knowledge as to how to approach songs with rhythmic and musical accuracy. It will allow you to make music in the future with a theoretical approach to make the music more individualistic.

Stuart is extremely reliable and professional. He is very focused and goal-oriented during the lessons, and gives clear feedback to both our children and us, the parents. We particularly appreciate and trust his assessment and advice on the potential of our childrens' voices, and his approach to reaching this potential over time.
We are now looking forward to him teaching both our children in the months and years to come.
