Personal Description:
I have been fascinated by music for as long as I can remember. I first started having piano and recorder lessons at the age of 7 and progressed through the ABRSM grades.
At age 9 I began having accordion lessons. I also began composing my own songs at the age of 11 in 1981 which is when I began to get really obsessed with popular music of the day. Back in the early eighties the only music lessons available were for classical music. I like classical music but not enough to dedicate my entire life to it.
Age 15 I formed my own band and continued playing in semi professional bands until the age of 29
At age 16 I dropped piano and accordion lessons for electric guitar.
At age 18 I went to study a BED at teacher training college and completed one year.
After college I worked as an occupational therapist in various local institutions.
I began self employed music teaching at the age of 21. I have also worked as a volunteer teaching music in Latin America.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been a self employed music teach for 35 years. I have also worked lecturer at an adult education centre for 9 years. Completed one year of teacher training BED but left to pursue a career in music performance. I have worked for voluntary charities in Mexico, Peru and Brazil : Most of these were centres specialising in special needs.I have also worked as a music therapist for special needs adults .
Tutoring Approach:
My teaching approach is geared towards the pupils needs. Almost everyone has a type or types that they love and this brings out the best in them.
At first I ask what type of music the pupil really likes and I assess their strengths and weakness. This can be done very early on by seeing if they have natural rhythm and pitch.
I pride myself on the ability to get anyone to a basic standard regardless of how unmusical they think the are. I use a variety of books for teaching, I can enter pupils for exams of all styles (classical, jazz, pop or rock) if they wish to take exams.
I especially enjoy teaching Autistic and other special needs
