Personal Description:
I am a musician, performer, composer and sound artist based in Liverpool. I have been playing the violin for over 40 years and composing since the age of 11. As a performer I have played around the world, and regularly tour Europe and the UK. I studied music at Liverpool University, focusing on performance and composition, achieving a high first, and also completed a Masters degree in Composition there. While at the University, I was leader of the orchestra for two years, and was awarded the Jane Longhurst Memorial Prize for violinists. In my performing career, I focus on contemporary music and improvisation.
Tutoring Experience:
I have a wide range of teaching experience in teaching. As well as many years of experience as a private tutor for violin, double bass and piano, I have previously been a performance lecturer at Hope University. I also have experience leading group music workshops with both children and adults. I have taught mathematics as a private tutor from Key Stage 4 to A-level.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tuition varies according to the level and interests of the student. I teach mostly classical playing, but have also taught folk, jazz, rock and dance music, as well as other styles. I focus on technique and musicality. Technique is the bedrock of musical ability. With intermediate to advanced tutees, I like to introduce some element of improvisation, which, I believe, enhances an intuitive understanding and feel for music. I also introduce aspects of music theory into lessons when it is appropriate to the apprehension of the music.
In compositional lessons, for beginners I focus mainly on technique and developing compositional strategies, as well as exposing students to a variety of music that may inform their own development. For more intermediate to advanced tutees, I focus more on helping to clarify and organise the student's own compositional ideas, advising on structure and musical development.
