Personal Description:
I am currently the organist of Saint Gabriel's Church, Swansea and Saint Barnabas' Church, Swansea. I am also the organ scholar of Saint Mary's Church, Swansea. I was previously the organist and choirmaster of Saint Theodore's Church, Port Talbot. Whilst studying the organ at Cardiff University, I was the organ scholar of Saint Augustine’s Church, Rumney. Prior to this, I was the organ scholar of Llandovery College during my time there as a pupil. I have vast amounts of experience in keyboard music, especially relating to the baroque period and early music in general. I have been an active composer and performer in the South Wales area for over a decade. I have performed in various musicals over this time period and as a musical director I have had to teach and be patient with any mistakes that may arise on stage.
Tutoring Experience:
I have experience of teaching all ages and I am currently working in local schools as part of my work experience through Cardiff University as well as during my PGCE course with UWTSD. Over the past few years I have taught privately as a vocal, piano, and music theory teacher.
Tutoring Approach:
I look to make learning accessible and enjoyable for all ages and abilities while learning the fundamentals of music. For those looking to gain some musical qualifications, I follow the the ABRSM exam syllabus and the RSCM voice for life series. I cater to casual learners as well by putting the emphasis on the enjoyment of the music rather than preparation for exams. I also look to excite pupils for their grades rather than worry them about getting full marks; after all, it’s the musicality and the enjoyment that are the most important things.

Simon is an exceptional piano instructor who combines his impressive musical skills with a supportive teaching approach. His expertise as a pianist and deep understanding of music theory are evident in every lesson. Simon's observant nature allows him to provide valuable guidance, particularly when I'm working on pieces and scales that require specific techniques. He's a patient and friendly teacher who always takes the time to listen to my questions and tailor the lessons to my interests, never forcing musical exams like ABRSM on me. Instead, he focuses on helping me learn what I want to learn. Beyond his musical talents, Simon's teaching area offers the practical advantage of ample parking, making each lesson easily accessible. His combination of musical expertise, adaptable teaching style, and approachable personality makes him an outstanding piano teacher.
I have chosen to have 15 mins piano theory and 45 mins singing. Simon is a very good pianist and can play anything that I have presented him with. I am trying opera songs at the moment , for the first time.
Simon is my first singing tutor, so not quite sure how to score, but I enjoy the lessons and it keeps me focused on my music and on improving the way I sing. I practise at home in between lessons.
I find him a good confidence builder. I am a mature pupil. Ms S. Watts.
