Hi, my name is Simon and I am a Glasgow based music teacher specialising in bass guitar/double bass, jazz and composition. I also teach beginners piano, keyboard/synth, advanced guitar and advanced music theory. I am flexible to arrange lessons around the times which suit the student whether weekly or fortnightly reflecting the realistic amount of time available in their week to practice. I can arrange lessons during the day or in the evenings to suit any kind of student. I am happy to teach students as a group on request. I have experience of teaching in a variety of different learning environments.
I have been teaching for over 10 years and apply my experience as a proffessional musician and a graduate of the Edinburgh Napier Popular Music degree in bass and composition to my teaching practice where my goal is to enable my students to grow a greater enthusiasm and love for music and sound.
I am happy to take on any level of bassist, double bassist, jazz musician, guitarist, ukulele or composer. For piano I teach beginner to intermediate players. I teach both adults and children. I can help students prepare for music exams, including Highers (I achieved Advanced Higher A), Rock School Bass Guitar Grades, ABRSM Double Bass Grades or Music Theory exams. I teach many different styles such as Rock, Blues, Pop, Metal, Funk, Folk, Jazz whatever you want!
I tailor lessons to the student and I teach students to read sheet music and to play by ear. I think every musician should learn to do both so I encourage ear training/active listening, sight reading and transcription in lessons and as homework. I tailor lessons to the student with my own transcriptions and teaching material and utilising published music books. I am happy to work through specific material if provided by the student.
In my teaching discipline there is a balance between enabling the student to commit to their practice by laying out clear goals and expectations, and presenting enjoyable lessons with a laid-back attitude that give full consideration to enabling the student’s enthusiasm for music and sound to grow.
I enjoy working with students who are enthusiastic, whether with the simple goal of enjoying their music or greater aspirations for a career in music (not that the two are mutually exclusive!). I like teaching because it is challenging and requires the teacher to adapt to the student and to kindle their enthusiasm.
I got into music because it amazed me how each unique instrument could combine together to make one sound greater than the sum of its parts. My music heroes are Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and those other jazz (and bass) giants but also film composers like Bernard Herrmann and Michael Kamen, conductors like Daniel Barenboim and unique artists like Bjork.
I developed to become the musician I am today by expanding my musicality through teachers, some more typical than others. Every time I play music I learn and I am a student of the musicians around me, the composer of the composition or the band leader, and in turn, through my playing, composition and band leading, I reciprocate and teach in return.
I teach from my home studio at 51 Nursery Street, Glasgow. I can travel to the student's home (reasonable travel costs may apply). I also teach online.
