Personal Description:
My name is Shaun and I can teach brass instruments including trumpet/cornet, tenor horn, baritone/euphonium, trombone and tuba. Theory (in preparation for ABRSM exams or GCSE/A Level study), composition skills (including preparation for Edexcel, AQA and OCR exams at GCSE/A Level) and Piano or keyboard. I have a dedicated teaching space at my home.
I have an MA in Music Performance and regularly perform as a Tuba player in local orchestras and brass groups. I am currently musical director for Hook Norton Brass Band and Brackley Male Voice Choir and have had experience working with a range of brass, wind and vocal ensembles.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been involved in teaching for over ten years. I have taught as a Peripatetic Teacher for Swindon Music Co-operative, Wiltshire Music Service as well as Northamptonshire Music Service when I moved up to Buckingham. I have taught secondary music at a number of schools and have good experience of Edexcel, OCR and AQA exam boards at GCSE and A Level. I have also set up a BTEC program at one of my schools, giving the students the opportunity to study for a First Certificate in Music. I have had experience of teaching classes as well as small groups and individuals throughout my teaching career.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to music tuition is varied but is centred around the needs of each individual student. I aim to ensure that students can produce good results with good technique. However, the first and most important thing is the music itself and producing a great sound. I believe that it is important for a student to build self confidence and belief in what they can do, and enjoy the sound that they make. This will enable a student to produce their best results with a good and clear understanding of how to replicate what is covered in lessons. I use a practice diary with all students as this is a good place to detail important elements of the lesson. I am happy to be contacted via email or skype as required.
