Personal Description:
I am a professional freelance musician currently living in North East London. I love music in all its forms and I try and involve myself as much as I can in the music scene, be it performing, attending concerts, or simply listening to the radio.
I have much professional performing experience, including with the Northern Chamber Orchestra, the Hallé, Manchester Camerata, and Netherlands Wind Ensemble, and I am on the extras list for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. I have also performed concertos and chamber music.
In my spare time I enjoy watching movies and TV, drinking tea and coffee, dogs, and socialising.
Tutoring Experience:
I have lots of teaching experience in schools, music academies and music centres, and privately. I currently teach 20 students one-to-one and eight whole-class instrumental lessons on a weekly basis, mostly between ages 6 and 19 but in the past I have taught up to age 70 or 80. I have entered many pupils for exams, and also taught many pupils who have no interest in exams at all.
Tutoring Approach:
Since teaching needs to be flexible and adaptable, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, I make sure that I tailor all my lessons to the individual student. I also ensure that students always enjoy their lessons, particularly when they are younger, so that they are motivated to work to achieve their full potential. I think it’s really important that students learn how to take charge of their own practice and development, and a vital step for this is making sure they are comfortable in their lessons; they must feel it is a safe space where they are allowed to make mistakes and experiment with different approaches and interpretations without judgement. I always make sure the student chooses their own repertoire, rather than forcing them to practise a piece I have chosen for them, as I find this much more conducive to good learning and practising.
