Personal Description:
I am a freelance teacher of 10 years experience. I have taught students across all ages and abilities: small children who love music; young teenagers and talented university students; and adults starting out for the first time. I consider myself to be an energetic and passionate person who genuinely loves helping students reach their goals!
I have been playing the trumpet since I was 6 years old, the piano since 10. I have received musical scholarships from Wells Cathedral School, Royal Welsh School of Music and Drama, King's College London and University of Oxford. I have been taught by some of the best teachers in the U.K. from leading orchestras and conservatoires including RAM, RCM and Guildhall. I have performed professionally, playing at the Barbican, Wigmore hall and the Royal Albert Hall in classical orchestras and big bands. I have also worked semi-pro as a conductor for 6 years with amateur orchestras and semi-pro opera companies in London.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught the trumpet and piano continuously for 11 years privately and in schools in London, with children and adults alike from beginners through to advanced players. I have successfully guided over twenty students through RCM and Guildhall exam (1-8), with all passing with distinction or merit level, as well as prepared school and university students for their GCSE, A-Level and university-level performance exams.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe in giving you a skill for life. Lessons will be varied and flexible, built to engage you imaginatively and musically. Goals will be set by you, and 'music' is always at the centre of lessons!
As someone who technically struggled with their instrument as a teenager, you can expect to have an empathetic and understanding teacher responsive to your needs. I understand personally that there is no 'one size fits all' approach to teaching!
For those who wish to pass graded exams, we will work on building a solid technical foundation and build basic musicianship skills. For those who wish to play casually or just your favourite works, we will work on what you need technically and musically with those pieces always in mind.
For advanced players, I can work directly on the nuances of the instrument and musicianship: musical analysis, approaches to genres, advanced technical skills and studies, and performance psychology.
First lesson is always free, to make sure I'm the 'right' teacher for you :)
