Personal Description:

I am a classically trained musician currently reading music at King’s College London. I am studying Singing under Sarah Champion from the Royal Academy of Music, and had also been under the tuition of Jovita Leung who teaches at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and Andrew Kidd at Wells Cathedral School. I was also awarded a specialist musician scholarship at Wells Cathedral School, and have participated in multiple choirs and vocal ensembles. The Philharmonia Chorus, Wells Cathedral School Choralia, and the Good Hope School Choir, just to name a few.

My journey as a cellist began when I was five. Having studied under Tan Cong who teaches at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and Eric Yip who is a regular cellist in the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. I have also participated in orchestras both at King’s College London and Good Hope School Hong Kong.

Piano was the first instrument I started, and at that moment I did not have any connection with professional musicians and have fully experienced the difference between a qualified and an inexperienced teacher when I began learning piano under the guidance of Dr. Crystal Lam Kai Yin.

Moreover, as a beginner guitarist as well, taking lessons on the side of studies, I understand the struggles of a beginner musician all too well. Without clear guidance it is incredibly easy to get lost and loose motivation to learn, thinking you are just not good enough. However, with proper guidance music should be accessible to all.

Tutoring Experience:

As a freelance musician, I have worked with multiple students, mostly children in helping them achieve their desired grade and to create structure where they don’t find learning music to be a chore. I have also worked with pre-schoolers in a music discovery course, allowing them to explore different instruments and repeating rhythms, slowly building their interest towards music.

Tutoring Approach:

While teaching, I hope to make the experience fun and enjoyable, and practice manageable with clear goals and practice methods. Not only developing your technical skills but also your musicianship and musical knowledge. Improper teacher as I have experienced creates bad habits, and once they are formed, it takes double the effort to make it right. As a teacher, I aim to make things right the first time, equipping my students with proper techniques, postures and knowledge for them to succeed. I also highly encourage parents to take part in the learning process as a learning partner for your child. Occasion helping them with practice, makes them feel they’re not alone in the learning process. It is incredibly helpful to have someone by your side when you are stuck with a problem that you couldn’t quite remember the answer to and being able to figure it out together, instead of giving up straight away.
