Personal Description:
Sam studied euphonium at the Birmingham Conservatoire with David Childs and Katrina Marzella where he won the prestigious Birmingham Conservatoire Brass Prize in his final year. He was also a finalist in the Birmingham Philharmonic Concerto Prize and won the Bernard Brown Chamber Music Prize with his quartet Centenary Brass. Sam gained a place on an Erasmus scheme which involved spending part of his degree studying at the Lemmensinstituut in Belgium under the guidance of Nick Ost and Glenn Van Looy.
Sam has been playing Solo Euphonium with Wantage Band since April 2013 and in this time has won the Southern Counties Best Euphonium Prize in 2014, 2015 and 2016, Best Euphonium at the London Regional Championships in 2017 and 2018 as well as competing at the Royal Albert Hall in the Brass Band National Finals of Great Britain in 2014 and 2016. A career highlight for Sam was when he performed Philip Wilby’s Euphonium Concerto with the Birmingham Conservatoire Brass Band, under the baton of the composer himself in February 2013.
Whilst a student, Sam also took lessons on the trombone and achieved Grade 8 before moving onto further education. The skill for Sam to be able to switch between instruments has been fully utilised both as a performer and a teacher.
Sam has been teaching at Berkshire Maestros since June 2013 mostly in the West Berkshire area. He's been in the management team since 2016 where his focus has turned to wider engagement and accessibility for young people and helping other teachers achieve their potential.
As well as this he has a pool of students across Oxfordshire and Wiltshire centring mostly in the Wantage area. Many of his students have gained places in National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and have been successful in major competitions.
