Personal Description:

I began playing brass at the age of 8. Starting on the trumpet but moving to the trombone to suit my embouchure, I continued playing trumpet for pleasure and have also played Baritone/Euphonium for brass and wind bands.
I grew up with the Welsh brass band tradition, but quickly became involved in orchestras, wind bands and jazz ensembles. My love of music led me to Cardiff to be where the gigs were. I play professionally in a number of bands along with session work. I am a member of afro funk/Hip hop band Afro Cluster, gonzo rock and roll band Tankus and jazz big band Siglo Section.
Some great teachers have given me the guidance to get where I am today and I believe I can impart some of their wisdom, along with that accumulated from my own experiences onto others.

Tutoring Experience:

Having completed work experience with my brass tutor Alan Phillips in Aberystwyth, I have since taught a few students (some primary school children, some amateur adults, and a few in between!). Whilst I do not have years of experience teaching, I have a great deal of experience of being taught by tutors with varying styles, and have accumulated a wide variety of resources and approaches to teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

Tuition is only viable if the teacher and student can reach an accord. My preferred routine is to meet with potential students for an initial session to establish their level, approach, and whether a good working relationship can be established. Beyond a successful first session, I am very open to teaching the style or discipline that the student desires, with a strong focus on the fundaments of brass playing. Prepare for long notes, lip slurs, breathing exercises without your instrument and other such joyous hardships.
