Personal Description:
I have a Postgraduate in Music Performance and a Bachelor's of Music from Cardiff University. I am a friendly and patient teacher with a kind teaching approach. I have an ABRSM Performance Diploma (which is 2 grades above grade 8), Grade 8 on the flute, Grade 5 Theory and have completed a Postgraduate Module in Music Teaching.
I was Principal Flautist of Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra and have over 20 years' playing experience during which I have competed in many national competitions both as a soloist and as a member of numerous orchestras and ensembles. I have recorded many orchestral CD’s, including the world premiere of Claude Debussy’s two newly found works.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught and lead The Carducci Quartet (a professional string quartet) as part of a Postgraduate Music Leadership module and was also asked to give a lecture at Cardiff University on the workings of the flute.
I have a 100% ABRSM Exam pass rate and I have a lot of one-on-one instrumental teaching experience, because I am a full-time instrumental tutor and I have coached Cardiff University's woodwind sectionals along with various University Choirs/Ensembles.
I was Principal Flautist of Cardiff and Vale Youth Wind Band, which have performed at Carnegie Hall, New York and were 1st place, Platinum Award Winners of the National Concert Band Festival - Great Britain. I have been First Saxophone in a jazz band which won best Youth Ensemble in Wales at the National Eisteddfod.
I have a clear DBS check.
Tutoring Approach:
My top priority is to make sure that everyone is comfortable and happy and develops at their own pace, whether they are looking to progress up the grades quickly, to take their time, or to learn simply for enjoyment. I give high quality lessons in which I tailor each session to the individual depending on their goals/needs.
My instrumental teaching covers tone quality, tuning, breath control, vibrato, musicality, phrasing, audience communication and strong diaphragm and tonguing techniques. I also offer confidence and performance training to the individual if need be.
Beginners welcome. I am also happy to conduct the lessons through the medium of Welsh.
