Personal Description:
I am a music graduate of Hull University ('96), since when I have taught privately piano, organ, singing, all brass instruments and music theory. I moved to South Yorkshire in 2008 from Hull where I was Organist and Choir Master for several years at St Mary's Church, Cottingham, and Musical Director of the Hull Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. I am also an experienced accompanist of soloists, and choirs, in the concert hall, or for exams. Since moving to Rotherham I have taught at the former Sheffield College of Music, and Doncaster College, and have been accompanist at Rotherham College. I have also been accompanist to the Friends on Harmony community choir, and the Margaret Duckworth Singers. Aside from all of this, I am busy in the musical theatre world, and am a Musical Theatre tutor at Rotherham College, as well as having worked with many local societies including Thurcroft Musical Theatre Group, Handsworth and Hallam Theatre Company, and Wales Community Theatre Players.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught many pupils over the years ranging from young children (6+) to retired people (60+). Some of my pupils have gone to study music at university, enter music competitions, and perform at a local level. Others have learnt more for pleasure, and I try and adapt lessons to what the individuals want to acheive either in the short or long term. I currently have pupils studying at all levels from grade 1 through to diploma level.
Tutoring Approach:
I find that a balance between technical work, (scales, exercises, and studies), and pieces aimed at putting skills into practice works well, as without technical skills the level that can be acheived is often limited, or more difficult to acheive. For pupils studying for exams I use both the ABRSM and LCM syllabuses, but for those who don't want to go down that route, we can still gauge what level they are working at.
