Personal Description:

I studied at the RNCM with Trevor Wye, and was a prizewinner in the Young Artists’ Competition of the International Flute Association, held in the USA. I was Principal Flute in the Performing Arts Symphony Orchestra for fifteen years, and I am currently Principal Flute with Sinfonia Viva. As a freelance performer I have played with many of Britain’s leading orchestras, including the Halle, Manchester Camerata, Manchester Concert Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Northern Ballet Sinfonia, Orchestra da Camera and the Philharmonia. I also perform with the chamber ensembles Fourtune and Zephyr. I am one half of Appassionata, a flute and harp duo which has released a CD.

Tutoring Experience:

I have over 30 years of flute teaching experience, varying from beginners to advanced level. I formally taught flute at the Junior RNCM. I have now been teaching at Chethams School of Music for 34 years. I currently teach flute at several private schools in the North West. I am also a flute tutor for the National Children's Orchestras of Great Britain. Additionally, I teach privately at home on a weekly basis. Over the years, I have gained many teaching successes, including students achieving good results in either their ABRSM/Trinity exams and/or Diploma qualifications. Many of my students have also secured places in the National Children's Orchestras of Great Britain, National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and conservatoires.

Tutoring Approach:

The student is assessed initially to see where their musical interests lie, and then a suitable programme of study is discussed and agreed. I ensure that the workload is appropriate and is always fun and enjoyable. The student should leave each lesson feeling a sense of achievement and enthused, ready to continue practising for their next lesson. My patient manner ensures that the lesson is relaxed, productive and pressure-free. I aim to develop skills of all students, regardless of their initial standard and aspirations. Many will want to play just for fun, while others may aim to enter conservatoire education and ultimately a career in music.
