Personal Description:
Philip is located in Northwood Hills, Greater London and offers his services as a piano, singing, keyboard, theory of music and composition tutor to students aged 7 and above of any ability. He can teach students of any age, but has a particular specialism in teaching beginner piano to adults.
Philip has two professional qualifications, these being the Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the University of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire. For the BMus (Hons) he studied singing under the tutelage of Paul Wade, focussing on vocal technique and acquiring a professional standard. His postgraduate degree was in contemporary composition mentored by Dr. Bryn Harrison.
Additionally, Philip can assist students preparing for their GCSE or A level in music. Whilst stuyding at the University of Huddersfield (with its close links to the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival), Philip has acquired a particular interest in the music of the 20th and 21st centuries and can assist with avant-garde/experimental composition. He is also experienced and happy to guide students in any desired style or genre.
Philip offers tuition to students of all ages and abilities and he structures every lesson to meet the student’s requirements. He is of the philosophy that learning music should be fun; therefore it matters not if you wish to study for the nationally recognised ABRSM/Trinity examinations or whether you prefer to study for your own personal enjoyment.
Philip is currently the Director of Music at the Parish Church of St. Anselm, Hatch End; where he plays the organ for the Sunday morning eucharist.
Being a talented pianist, Philip is available to be hired for ABRSM and Trinity examinations as an accompanist. He is often available to accompany at short notice.
Tutoring Experience:
Philip has over 25 years' experience of teaching children and adults in both London and Yorkshire. He started teaching prior to being a music student, where he undertook private pupils studying piano, organ and singing. He then relocated to Yorkshire, where he continued to teach in conjunction with his studies; in 2012, he returned to Harrow to continue with his previous successes and is now based in Northwood Hills.
Tutoring Approach:
Philip is happy to teach with a view towards taking recognised examinations or simply for your own enjoyment and personal fulfilment. He teaches at a pace where he feels the student is able to understand, and where sufficient evidence is shown in tackling the intricacies of the techniques being taught.
