Personal Description:
Hi I am Phil. I have been playing the guitar for fifty years and teaching it for forty years! My professional training was at The Guildhall School of Music from where I graduated in 1992 when I became Phil AGSM! After graduating I pursued my studies privately for another twenty-five years, whilst earning a living playing and teaching. I have performed every type of concert from solo classical guitar recitals to playing in a a rock band, at venues as diverse as The South Bank and town precincts!
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching for over forty years now! As a teenager I was proud to be studying A-level music during the day, and then teaching adult education classes at the same college during the evenings! After graduating from Guildhall School of Music I spent fifteen years doing instrumental teaching in Secondary Schools but "broke free" in 2008 to pursue my true passion which is private one to one lessons. I have taught several hundred students from a multitude of backgrounds and ages ranging from six, to eighty-three years! Many of my students have gone on to earn money through playing and some also achieved grade 8, diploma and degree qualifications themselves(before setting themselves up as a rival teacher in one case!).
Tutoring Approach:
The biggest revelation I had about the learning process was that what holds people back is much more to do with psychological factors (self-image/world view), than actual musical ability; playing music is the easy bit, "getting out of our own way" is the difficult part, and also the bit that most teachers don't even mention, let alone teach! Realising this and battling my own demons I have also studied many parallel subjects including Tai-chi, Meditation, Yoga, Alexander technique, Hypnotism, NLP and a lot more(it is a wonder I ever found time to play the instrument!) All my teaching is geared towards the student's needs, you can progress at your own pace. Study for exams and diplomas, or just play for fun. You don't have to be "gifted" or have a "special ear" or any of that nonsense as long as you have hands that work and at least a minimal level of intelligence you can learn, and I can teach you whatever you need.
