Personal Description:
I have a long history of musical training, dating back to when I started learning clarinet and piano at around 8 years old. Since then I have played in many ensemble bands and sung in many choirs throughout school, university and beyond. I reached Grade 8 piano, Grade 7 tenor saxophone, Grade 5 clarinet and Grade 5 theory.
I have studied music academically as well, doing my Bachelors in music and subsequently completed a Masters in Music Therapy.
More recently, I have been the rehearsal pianist for community or church choirs, and also done some arranging / harmonising music. The accordion is something I have taught myself, beginning during my Masters. I haven't taken grades but it has become my second instrument, behind piano.
My musical training was based on the classical approach - learning the basics of scales, arpeggios, reading music. From there I could develop more into more popular styles, singing and accompanying myself with chords, although the classical training gave me a solid foundation.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught both younger and older people in the past on an ad hoc basis. It is something I would like to return to in a more intentional way, because I now have some more time and a lot of my talent and interest is in this area.
Tutoring Approach:
I can be flexible, but all things being equal I teach the way I was taught, by starting with the basics - scales, arpeggios, theory, reading notation. It will take a long time to learn any instrument so patience is required (scales can be fun), but if you would prefer a more casual approach and are not interested in grades then I can adapt to that as well.
Note on availability: I have put that I am available weekdays, evenings, and weekends, although this depends on the day. My preference is for you to come to my home and I think face to face would be most beneficial for learners, but I could do online or at your home (within 2 miles) if you have a suitable instrument.
