Personal Description:
I am a saxophone and piano teacher, with an MSc from Oxford University and a BSc Bristol University. I have been playing the saxophone for 10+ years and completed my Performance Diploma in Classical Saxophone in 2016 (DipLCM). I have extensive performance experience in orchestral, ensemble, concert band, popular music and jazz band playing.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching for over ten years, both 1-1 and group lessons. During that time I have taught a range of ages, from 6 to 60+.
I have modelled my teaching methods around my own experience in performance, examinations and auditions, as well as masterclasses from various professionals, including Kenneth Edge.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to teaching varies from student to student in order to meet each individual student's learning needs. However, some key aspects to my approach are outlined below.
Having fun and Being Creative!
I believe in the importance of creating a learning space where everyone is comfortable, relaxed and having a bit of fun. I so enjoy the characters of each of my students and especially seeing shy students come out of their shell. To learn a musical instrument we have to be willing to get things wrong and to try again and again! I want all my students to enjoy the experience and be comfortable to let their creativity flow.
Focusing on Fundamentals
I like to have a healthy mix of scales, exercises and music theory along with playing pieces or songs that they enjoy. I aim to empower my students to be able to learn whatever songs and pieces they like using the tools I provide them with.
Performace skills
For my performing and exam attending students, I like to dedicate time to the art of performace. I learned through experience how to use breathing and warm up techniques to get in the zone and fight off performance anxiety. I have helpled many students overcome their fears and excel in their performing endevours.
