Personal Description:

I'm Michelle, a singer, songwriter, music producer, composer, DJ and educator living in East London. I studied music at Brunel University where I specialised in performance, vocals, improvisation, popular music studies and electronic music production. I've had eight years of classical and popular singing lessons and specialising in vocals at university. I'm fascinated with the voice, how it works, and how important the mind-body connection is when it comes to singing. I make beats on a programme called Ableton which I have so much fun with and love teaching to others. Although I know my way around music theory well, I wouldn't class myself as a classical singer or musician. I'm very into electronic dance music and jazz. I like to think of music as a tool to heal, play and experiment, not just something to be 'really good' at. I work with people to help them find 'their sound'… which I know I can do because I've worked very hard to find my sound :)

Tutoring Experience:

I have 6 years experience teaching piano, singing, music tech, whole class music and music theory. Ages have ranged from 7-60 and I have taught on a one-to-one basis, led small workshops and led large groups of up to 60 people. I work with Newham Music as a music educator specialising in studio session [music tech/electronic music production] and early years whole class teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm a firm believer that most of the learning takes place outside or around lessons. So I make sure to give my students clear practise plans for their learning and growing to continue in their own time. I approach teaching as a collaboration between myself and the student rather than an 'I am the boss' mentality. I want it to be your space just as much as mine.
