Personal Description:
I have played guitar and mandolin all my life, and still play regularly at folk clubs and at a range of functions. I'm a very approachable person and enjoy meeting people (of all ages). I specialise in traditional folk (English and Irish) on the mandolin, and Blues on the guitar, but I can also play other popular styles.
Tutoring Experience:
Professionally, I taught English for over 30 years. My music teaching has been informal, rather than for qualifications. I've taught children, teenagers, and plenty of adults too.
Tutoring Approach:
There are many ways of learning to play a musical instrument, and I try to tune in to a student's preferred approach - whilst also trying to introduce them to other approaches, if it seems appropriate. Personally I like to teach music theory alongside the practice, covering keys, scales, sheet music and so on: though I think it's also important to learn to play an actual tune at a early stage of learning. I can be very flexible in my approach. What's important is that you enjoy it, and make some progress.
