Personal Description:
Hi, my name's Michael and I am offering lessons in the clarinet and saxophone as well as composition and theory.
Tutoring Experience:
A graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, I have taught at Yorkshire Young Musicians, Aldeburgh Young Musicians and The National Youth Orchestra as well as various schools and colleges around Manchester. I also have years of experience working privately with students from a wide range of abilities and ages.
I am a member of the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM) and am an ISM Registered Private Teacher having agreed to adhere to the ISM Safeguarding & Child Protection Policy, Code of Practice and Procedures and obtained a DBS Enhanced Disclosure certificate (previously CRB).
Tutoring Approach:
I tailor my approach to suit individual needs and goals, whether you want to work towards graded exams or just play for fun. An experienced teacher, I've been lucky enough to work with some of the best musicians in the country which informs and enriches my teaching.

I've had a couple of lessons with Michael now and he immediately put me at ease. I was surprised how comfortable and enjoyable I found it as we worked through a little sight reading together. He's been really encouraging and has helped me to work on my tone, remembering the joy of making music not just playing the right notes at the right time. I'm looking forward to making progress and finding a way to make playing a pleasure for many years to come.
Update: After a year of lessons with Michael I'm so pleased with how far my playing has progressed. I'm really enjoying learning. Michael clearly enjoys teaching. He is really great at encouraging me to reach towards a higher standard than I think possible, being supportive when I've worked hard but struggled and knowing the difference. Back in March, I found adapting to the covid lockdown difficult at first and that showed through in my playing. Michael was patient and empathetic. He reminded me to be kind to myself, learning remotely at a difficult time. That advice really helped me, not just in getting back in getting back on track, which I have, but in my working life too. I really want to extend my thanks to Michael for everything over the last year and I'm still excited about what we can achieve in the future.
As a teacher, Michael is very patient and accommodating of various mistakes I make along the way. He is very good at isolating key aspects of my playing and suggesting helpful exercises to improve upon them.
I would greatly reccomend Michael to anyone who wants to pick up the Saxophone (or Clarinet) and I look forward to seeing how far I have come with his tuition by next year!
