Personal Description:
I am a professional violinist, piano accompanist and teacher with over 30 years experience teaching all ages from beginners to diploma level and entry into UK conservatoires. I studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and later, with the acclaimed teacher, Wen Zhou Li. As a solo violinist and chamber musician I have performed with Northern Ballet and for music societies nationwide, including appearances at St John Smith’s Square, Lake District Summer Music Festival, Purcell Room, Gloucester Three Choirs Festival, BBC North, Huntingdon Hall Worcester, Malvern Festival, Autumn in Malvern Festival, Cheltenham Festival, Cheltenham Pittville Pump Rooms and numerous music societies in the North West. As first violinist in the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera North, Northern Chamber Orchestra and the Manchester Camerata, Louise has performed throughout Europe and the UK, recorded for major record labels and broadcast for BBC Radio 3, Radio 2 and Television.
On the lighter side, I've worked for BBC TV, recorded mood music, pop and jazz for AV, TV & Films and worked with artists Lisa Stansfield, Tony Christie, Vince Hill, Howard Keel, Thomas Lang, Andy Prior, Mary O'Hara and concerts with Shirley Bassey, George Shearing, Cleo Laine and John Dankworth.
In addition to my work as a violinist, I have extensive experience as a piano accompanist, performing with singers and instrumentalists for exams, nationwide music societies and festivals, including the Malvern Festival & the Autumn in Malvern Festival, the Martin Trust, auditions and masterclasses at the Royal Northern College of Music and national competitions, including the Royal Overseas League.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught for over 30 years holding posts at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester University, the Birmingham Conservatoire, Gloucester Academy of Music & Drama and privately. I have coached students for Performance Diploma qualifications and assisted advanced students with their final year recital programmes. Students have gained places in the National Youth Orchestra & National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain, the UK’s Conservatories of Music including the Royal Northern College of Music, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, Welsh College of Music & Drama and scholarships to Cambridge & Oxford University. However, I have taught pupils at many levels from beginners to advanced and with varying abilities, who have realised their own potential and gained considerable enjoyment through music. Some testimonials: -
Morgan "Thank you for your numerous years of wonderful and inspiring teaching. I’m sure the violin will always be a significant part of his life. So thank you for giving him such a comprehensive foundation in all aspects of music appreciation. It really is a great gift that you have to given him". (March 2018)
Jane "Lou has had a fantastic year with you again and has made great progress. Thank you so much for your expert teaching and for all the help with advice about pieces and your support with preparing [her] for assessments and performances (and for making my parents feel so welcome when they watched part of a lesson earlier this year!) It is all greatly appreciated!… " (July 2017)
Violaine "Thank you for being an amazing teacher, I love my lessons… " (July 2016)
Ellen "I think Christy is very lucky to have you as her mentor." (April 2013)
Elizabeth "Miss is an exceptional, inspiring teacher, offering tuition sensitively tailored to the individual. She "makes work exciting" (our 10-year-old son) and fosters learning skills that enhance both technique and musicianship. Her reliability, trustworthiness and professionalism is excellent". (Jan 2013)
Katherine "My exam went really well today. I passed with 92%! I was very happy. Thank you very much for all of your help and your time. It really has helped me and made me achieve what I did, thank you." (July 2012)
Barry "You really do give me so much more than just the mechanics of playing, and for that i am truly grateful. I am truly inspired … I really cannot thank you enough. I finally feel i have a teacher who understands where i am coming from and is able to guide me through all the extremely varied aspects of playing." (Nov 2012)
Tutoring Approach:
I believe in teaching good technique from the start, encouraging pupils to produce good tone, a discerning ear and musicality. Notation is also taught from the start and lessons include many aspects of playing an instrument - music interpretation, technique, training the ear, rhythmic games, etc.
Parents are welcome to attend lessons with beginners and younger students, if desired. This may be particularly helpful in assisting a young child with their practice, which, if possible, is recommended for good progress.
If wished, I can help pupils prepare for exams, both ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall (but by no means essential), AS & A2 recitals and advanced students for auditions, concerts and competitions. I am keen for pupils to practise regularly to gain the best possible results and enjoyment from their studies. Adults and children are welcome from beginners to advanced, both on violin and piano, all of whom are welcome to have a no obligation trial lesson and/or further lessons with me, either for 30 mins (£26), 45 mins (£37.25) or an hour (£48) at my current rate.
