Personal Description:
Educated at the University of Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music, my main bassoon-playing activities are in the realm of chamber music and occasional orchestral work. I have a major role as CEO & Artistic Director of the National Youth Wind Orchestra, and am heavily involved with the British Double Reed Society, working to engage players and audiences in double-reed music and activities.
I am Bye-Fellow & Director of Studies in Music at Downing College, Cambridge, where I am also Director of Music. I lecture for the Music Faculty and supervise for a number of colleges, as well as being Director of Chapel Music & Organist at St Edmund's College. I also act as Co-ordinator for the Intercollegiate Choral Awards Scheme, which besides facilitating the annual Choral Trials for the University involves a number of widening participation activities.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching privately since 2006, and I also have several years' experience of school-teaching (secondary). I am experienced in giving workshops (singing, conducting, performance technique, chamber music etc.). I supervise undergraduates at Cambridge University as well as undertaking Faculty teaching, and I hold a Deputy Professorship at the Junior Department of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. I have also tutored for the Royal College of Organists and on Rodolfus Choral Courses for young singers. I have experience of preparing students for university and conservatoire interviews and auditions, and I also regularly undertake education work in schools, care homes, and elsewhere.
Tutoring Approach:
I always strive to inspire my tutees with the confidence to push themselves to achieve their full potential, while being aware that outside the lessons they also have other commitments. I am experienced in teaching students with learning difficulties and am happy to be flexible in my teaching style depending on the needs of the individual student.
