Personal Description:
Originally from Leicestershire I was awarded a scholarship to study bassoon at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, from where I graduated in 1989 with a G.G.S.M. diploma. At Guildhall I was taught by Graham Sheen, Meyrick Alexander, John Orford, Robin O'Neill and Ian Cuthill. I am now a freelance bassoonist working in the South West of England.
I also publish wind quintet and bassoon quartet arrangements **Removed By Admin** I sell music right around the world and a number of my publications have been broadcast on radio and **Contact Detail Removed**vision and also released on CD. June Emerson and Howarths are my main UK stockists.
Tutoring Experience:
I have over 20 years' experience teaching pupils ranging from 7-70! I teach both privately at home and at schools. I currently bassoon teach at:
Cheltenham Ladies' College
Badminton School (Bristol)
Redmaids' High School (Bristol)
Previously I have taught bassoon at:
Cheltenham College
The High School of Glasgow (2005-2016)
Clifton College (Bristol)
Clifton High School (Bristol)
The King's School, Canterbury.
I regularly enter pupils for Trinity and ABRSM exams, although taking exams is certainly not essential!!
Many of my pupils progress right through to Grade 8 and a number have successfully auditioned for the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland (NYOS) and Junior Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS).
Tutoring Approach:
Learning music should be fun and I work hard to build on my pupils' enthusiasm. I invariably use my bassoon to demonstrate to pupils as I feel that this is a crucially important part of the learning process. Lessons for beginners to Grade 5 are usually 30 minutes long - more advanced pupils may require longer lessons.
I also have piano grade 8 which means that I can play the simpler accompaniments and aural tests .
I am also very happy to teach theory to Grade 5 - indeed I teach this on a one-to-one basis at Cheltenham Ladies' College.
I am very willing to teach pupils from Grade 6 online via Zoom, but I don't feel online lessons are suitable for pupils below this playing level.
