Personal Description:
I am a graduate of the Royal College of Music, and I have extensive experience of performance, including solo, duets, quartets, bands, and full orchestra. My bachelor's degree involved teaching as well as performance. I live in North London and I teach exclusively from home. Music has always been a large part of my life, and I love playing and listening to music of all styles and genres.
Tutoring Experience:
I have more than 20 years of experience of teaching students of all ages and abilities, and have taught music both privately and in a school environment. I am equally keen to tutor students who wish to learn simply for pleasure as I am to support those wishing to pursue music qualifications, from beginner to an advanced level. I have tutored some students all the way from Grade I to Grade 8. Every one of my students who has been entered for exams has passed, and almost all have passed with either merit or distinction. I am qualified to teach music theory and aural skills in addition to instrumental techniques.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach has always been to encourage my students to grow and develop, both technically and in their musicality, and to gain a deeper appreciation of music. Becoming more proficient requires practice, and practice is much easier when the student loves to play and enjoys their lessons. I therefore create a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, encouraging students to ask any questions or request help with any challenging aspects of their pieces, aural skills, or music theory. At the end of each lesson, each student and I agree on achievable targets for the next lesson, and each student maintains a notebook with clear instructions on what to practice.
