Personal Description:
My name is Laura and I play viola and recorder professionally in both orchestras and in chamber music and I perform recitals in many churches across the country. I studied both the recorder and viola at the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music. My other main hobbies are singing in Cathedrals when their choirs are on holiday, beekeeping, hiking, knitting and bell ringing!
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching for over ten years having worked for the Liverpool Music Service and Bolton Music Service. Even though my first instrument is the viola, I have experience in teaching the violin and viola in every situation, whether whole class teaching, small groups and individuals, teaching all ages from 5 to 85 and from beginner level to post Grade 8. I have experience teaching students with SEN and have also coached a viola player to be awarded a place on the Junior RNCM programme and a violinist to play successfully in an audition for the National Children's Orchestra.
My other 'first' instrument is the recorder and I am very passionate about teaching this often-neglected instrument and showing people that it really is a beautiful-sounding instrument and that there is much more to recorder playing than first is thought.
I also have a wide experience of teaching Music Theory and in particular to coach students so that they achieve their ABRSM Grade 5 theory, many of my students have passed with distinction. These music theory sessions can be taught on online lessons or face to face.
Tutoring Approach:
I teach in a very positive and encouraging manner as I feel that this is definitely the best way to get the most out of a student. I am happy to use exams (both ABRSM and Trinity) to help motiva**Contact Detail Removed**arners to achieve goals, however I am equally happy to teach well-rounded musicianship without the use of exams if students do not want to take them. I actively encourage my students to join ensembles and orchestras when they are at the required level as I feel that this is where the real enjoyment comes from, making music with others.
Normally I teach pupils for 30 minutes duration for £15 but this can be extended to one hour for £30.

I am very happy to say, without any reservation, that she is a terrific teacher - kind, knowledgeable, and always encouraging of my efforts. I can't believe how much progress I have made in such a short time, and the credit for this has to go down to her positive and targeted support of my learning rather than any (somewhat limited!) natural ability on my part.
