Personal Description:
My name is Kate and I live in Penzance.
I have played the guitar and bass guitar for thirty years. In that time I have been in various bands. I am currently in an original band called The Tribunes, we play regularly in the pubs around West Cornwall. I write my own music. I have also recently played keyboards in Infinite Analogue Beauty, bass in Universal Revolution and drums in Diët Spanglë and Tycklemore Goats.
I studied music at school and hold a certificate in Grade V Theory of Music with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
Tutoring Experience:
I teach guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drums and ukulele. I can teach any modern styles, such as rock, folk, pop, punk, reggae or indie styles of music. I can teach music theory. I can also do band coaching and song-writing.
I have been teaching the guitar to people on and off for twenty-five years. I have been formally teaching since 2013, including in two primary schools.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe in tailoring the lessons to the individual student. I also believe in learning by doing. I aim to get each student starting to play the song they would most like to play by their second lesson. I believe this is far more inspiring than endlessly strumming one or several chords. I have scored all sorts of music from Black Sabbath to Ed Sheeran, from Bob Marley to Katy Perry. An inspired student practices and a student that practices learns. I do not spend a lot of time teaching theory, although students do learn theory as we go along. I also avoid endlessly practicing scales, although once a student progresses to the point where they want to start to play lead guitar, then scales become important. Nevertheless it can still be taught in a fun and exciting way.
