Personal Description:

Katy started her vocal training at the age of 18 at Colchester institute where she achieved a Distinction in popular music performance. Katy then moved to London to study a Diploma at Vocal tech where she was then successfully accepted to undergo a degree in Popular music where she graduated in 2010 with a 2:1. During her time in London, Katy did vocal Session for the BBC doing backing vocals for artists on shows like The National Lottery, Blue Peter, Fame Academy and featuring in the world cup advert in 2010 for The SUN newspaper.

Katy has been taught by a number of highly proclaimed vocal coaches such as David and Carry Grant (Fame Academy), Kim Chandler and Annabel Williams (X Factor) and is now able to pass on their great teachings to her own students and has been doing so since 2010.

Katy prides herself on not only being a vocal coach but a performer herself. She started a band whilst at university and has been fortunate enough to tour the Uk, Europe and Japan playing her music. Her band signed to Small Town Records 2011 in the Uk and in the same year signed to Twilight records in Japan and their album ‘Captives’ charted in the top 40 on the iTunes Rock Chart. Katy has been fortunate enough to have performed on some of the UK’s biggest music festivals such as Download, T in the park, Sonisphere, warped tour etc and her band have supported the likes of McFly.

Tutoring Experience:

Katy has been teaching privately and in schools since 2008, she has experience of teaching all age groups and all genres.

Tutoring Approach:

Each vocal lesson is individual because each student is unique. No two voices are the same and that is the beautiful thing about developing an individuals voice,whatever your ages, whatever your ability, whether you are a beginner or a professional vocalist, we can all better ourselves and make the most out of what we have been given… and who knows what you will discover one you start learning the right techniques for your voice.

Vocal lessons include a large number of techniques to suit the individual to help improve vocal health, breathing, range, pitch, strength, timing and confidence. Students are encouraged to choose their now songs to work on in the lessons and to do regular recording sessions in the lessons to build confidence and to listen to their own voices….its also a lot of fun. If students are pleased with the outcome of the recording session, there is an opportunity to make a professional youtube video so that you can share your achievements with your friends and family.

Many students wish sit vocal examinations to help further their knowledge of music and singing. Rock school are the UK’s number 1 vocal examination board in contemporary music, they offer a wide range of songs to choose from and you are able to choose your own songs as well. The exam can be taken in one of 2 ways, performance or technical. the performance grade just requires you to sing set pieces and ones of your own choice to an external examiner, the technical grade requires you to learn scale, arpeggios, harmonies, rhythm, phrasing and dynamics, music theory, sign reading and improvisation, great skills for those wishing to study music and college or university.
