Personal Description:
Hi, I'm an avid keyboard and piano player. I hold grade 8 merit in electronic Keyboard, and grade 8 distinction in piano. I have worked through both instruments from grade 3 upwards. The examination board for both instruments were, LCM, (London college of music). I also hold grade 5 in music theory, through the examination board, Associate board for the royal schools of music. I have a passion for music and play every day. I have a good knowledge in the theory of music. I have picked up some very good techniques in tutoring and passing on essential information and techniques to make the learner absorb and enjoy the learning process. I do teach on-line to assist with people who are isolated… although if you require online lessons, please note that you should have some knowledge about the keyboard operation, and where the notes are positioned on the keyboard. I teach my face to face students on line when needed, as they have the skills to operate the keyboard easily.
My travel radius is a 10 mile round trip… I have a DBS certificate
Tutoring Experience:
I have been on numerous presentation courses in my profession as a retired glass making manager. I have taught many people within my industry, all have been in the classroom environment plus one to one tutoring. I have excellent knowledge of music theory, and will present this constructively to the learner. Practical teaching will be a mix of using the instrument and P.C. interaction, plus previous theory examination papers, which we work through together at a comfortable pace, so the learner absorbs the information.
I have recently put forward 3 students for exams with the LCM, (London college of music). The results were 2 distinctions and a merit in practical exam performance, and a distinctions in grade 2, 3, music theory… More recent exam results in 2021 have been grade 4 theory distinction and grade 3 practical piano merit. I've just finished tutoring one of my students in grade 5 theory April 2022, and he achieved a distinction… 2023 April results… Grade 1 practical 3 distinctions and 2 merits, grade 1 theory distinction, and grade 5 practical distinction. Results for June 2023 Grade 2 practical, one distinction and one merit…
Tutoring Approach:
I have learned to be proactive in my approach to teaching and presenting. Breaking a task down into digestible chunks is the best way get the information across. LIke most things in life, we all need to be able to understand the information that is presented to us. I use Sibelius 5 to teach aspects of music score writing. I use Auralia to teach music theory as well as written exercises, and past examination papers… these are very useful and constructive in the learning process.

I am really enjoying learning the piano and my lessons with John.
Regards John
John is very knowlegable and passionate about his subject and this shines through and is inspiring.
John has always prepared for our lesson and gives good materials to take home to help with practice.
John is a person who has a sense of humour that brings an element of fun to the lesson.
When I asked my Grandson for some feedback he said " he is cool not like my teacher and I don't feel silly if I get it wrong."
I would absolutely recomend John as a tutor.
I've tried several times to learn Piano using various App's and online methods but could never stick to it. John quickly establishes your ability and then tailors his teaching to suit your needs.
Im currently 7 months in to seeing John for 1 hour per week and we're already discussing the dates for my Grade 1 exam
