Personal Description:
I studied Music at Oxford University and at Guildhall School of Music and am passionate about music and brass playing in particular. In addition to teaching, I am an experienced music examiner and a member of the panel
which sets the Trinity College London brass syllabus. Some of my arrangements feature on the syllabuses of the major exam boards, from grade 1 level upwards, while others have been recorded by The London Horn Sound, The Wallace Collection and the horns of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. My reconstructions of Mozart's incomplete horn concerto movements and my editions of other music for horn have been performed and recorded by horn soloists worldwide. My book, 'The Early Horn is published by CUP, and I was also on the advisory committee and contributor to their Encyclopedia of Brass Instruments. I am a regular contributor to magazines and journals on brass instruments and have written booklet notes and programme notes for hundreds of recordings and concerts.
Tutoring Experience:
I have thirty years' experience teaching brass both privately and as a visiting teacher in independent and state schools. I have also worked as Director and Assistant Director of Music in leading independent schools. Some of my students have gone on to positions within the music profession while others have been accepted by specialist music schools. Others have played with leading youth orchestras while some simply play for fun.
Tutoring Approach:
At the moment I teach online. Home visits will be available as soon as government guidelines allow them. My teaching is based on sound, academic principles and I encourage my students to obtain accredited qualifications, though I am well aware that nobody succeeds unless they enjoy what they are doing. As such, I ensure that I set clear goals and that lessons are progressive, inspiring and fun. My ability to communicate with and enthuse young people has led to my appointment as editor-in-chief of the innovative US-based project, 'Brass for Beginners', a role I enjoy almost as much as I enjoy teaching people to play!
