Personal Description:
I am John, I have a degree and MA in Music, I am a professional musician and private Clarinet, Saxophone and Music Theory teacher, with over 15 years’ experience, specialising in Jazz and Classical music.
Tutoring Experience:
I have experience of teaching all ability levels ranging from beginners to grade eight, including those who play for fun or those who wish to follow the ABRSM and Trinity grade levels. I have 100% pass rate with all of my pupils. I also teach Jazz and Classical music theory and can assist with GCSE and A Level Music. I am happy to travel throughout Essex, teach pupils at my home or online and I am available for lessons during the week, evenings and weekends.
If playing as part of a group appeals to you, I run my own Jazz and Saxophone Workshop every Thursday evening throughout the year in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, all ability levels and instruments are welcome, there is no need to book, just come along and join in!
I conduct workshops with the Southend Jazz Co-op, Essex, have taught workshops in Colchester and Brentwood, Essex, at the Semer Jazz workshop in Ipswich, Suffolk, a Jazz workshop at the Maldon Festival, Essex and a Jazz Ensemble Playing workshop at the Ipswich Jazz Festival, Suffolk, every year since 2017. In 2020, I taught online workshops for the Essex Easter Jazz and The Jazz Centre UK and the Suffolk Jazz School.
Tutoring Approach:
I am friendly, patient, easy going and welcome pupils of all ages including those that wish to play for fun or would like to follow a graded system. Each lesson is prepared and tailored for the individual pupil. I use a method of teaching called simultaneous learning. Instead of the traditional method of teaching by learning scales and playing through pieces, this approach extracts the ingredients of a piece. This is then worked through by using musical connections in rhythm, sound, writing, and then placed back into context, giving the pupil a full understanding of a piece.
