Information About James - Hackney teacher

Personal Description:

I am a professional recorder player, graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 2013. I've studied and worked with some of the world's leading musicians, including Pamela Thorby, Peter Holtslag, Daniel Bruggen, Rachel Brown and Atarah Ben Tovim MBE. The recorder for me is an instrument of beauty - I love the sounds and exploration of repertoire playing it allows. I love to teach, doing so across London and beyond.

Tutoring Experience:

I have over 14 years experience teaching young children to adults, beginners to advanced level and teach a wide variety of repertoire - medieval, renaissance, baroque and contemporary music. I have held master-classes and lessons in France, Bergerac with Atarah Ben Tovim MBE on her flute courses, including classes on baroque style and ornamentation. I also teach ABRSM Music Theory to grade 5 level, enabling students on passing the exam to progress onto higher graded examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

As a teacher I am friendly and approachable. I enjoy building a rapport with students over time, bringing out their musical personality and drawing on their strengths, enabling them to develop their musical potential. A focus on sound technique as well as historical and musical context and styles is developed. Group playing and aural skills are developed during the course of lessons.
I am familiar with the ABRSM exam system, and will teach working towards these exams if the student requires it. However exams are not essential for learning and a student can progress equally well working towards performances and other goals, or simply playing for fun.
