Personal Description:
Having graduated, as an organ scholar, from Cambridge University with a Bachelor of the Arts in music, music has played a central role in my life. From a very early age I have been eagerly diving into as deeply and widely into music as possible. I have given recitals on the organ, piano and singing and participated in various ensembles from jazz bands to orchestra. I have also enjoyed conducting orchestras and choirs as well as accompanying. I am keen to encourage others to explore the tremendous joy of music in all its richness. Please do ask if you any questions!
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching professionally since November 2016 as a private tutor and have taught people between the ages of 6 and 40 from all walks of life. I also have experience teaching pupils with autism and ADHD. I believe anyone can learn music – it is my wish that as many people have the opportunity to deeply engage with music as possible.
Tutoring Approach:
In teaching music, my aim is to cultivate a state of play as much as possible – after all, we don’t work music, we play it! My approach to music is essentially a constructive one, aiming to build on, refine and shape, where necessary, what the pupil already understands about music. In the first lesson I explore various aspects with the pupil, observing what piques their interest. From there, we adventure through the diverse terrains of music (satisfying the requirements of grades en route), uncovering musical understanding in a playful and intuitive way. This said, if there is a particular area which the pupil or parent/guardian are interested in, I am happy to deep-dive with them in such a direction.

James makes it fun but also gives her the incentive to practice.
As well as doing her grade pieces he gives some time for improvisation and he suggests some music for her to listen to on her Alexa, which she loves. J
James is an inspirational teacher, encouraging and light hearted. I would thoroughly recommend him to other young aspiring musicians.
