Personal Description:
I love teaching the guitar! Whether you are a beginner, a professional, or anything in between, I'd be delighted to help you become the guitarist you want to be! Lessons are geared towards your goals and ambitions, whether you want to simply enjoy playing as well as you can, perform in public, improve your technique or learn to read music better. And if you want to do exams, my students have a 100% pass rate with ABRSM/Trinity! Whatever it is, I'd love to help!
Here is what my students say:
“I have been lucky to have had several great classical guitar teachers but the time spent with Ian was the longest and the most valuable.” - Roger **Removed By Admin**
"Ian is an inspirational teacher. He came highly recommended and I have not been disappointed. He has the uncanny knack of identifying what needs to be changed and, critically, he can then explain how to change. He wears his considerable expertise lightly. He is warm, encouraging and enthusiastic in his approach. I cannot recommend him highly enough." - Prof. David **Removed By Admin**
“…completely lifechanging for my technical and musical development. I couldn’t recommend Ian more for any stage from beginner to professional. Simply fantasic!!” – Jack **Removed By Admin**
"Ian has been giving my adult daughter, who has learning difficulties, guitar lessons over the last 5 years. When we had to change from in person lessons to online lessons with the onset of Covid, I was concerned that this might prove less effective, but this has not been the case at all and indeed we continue with online lessons. Ian’s perceptive sensitivity as he listens, comments and advises comes over as if he were in the same room. His engaging positivity makes it easy to ask questions or admit one is not sure about a point – a quality often lacking. The joy and enthusiasm he has ignited and the progress my daughter has made speak volumes." - Marguerita **Removed By Admin**
My experience includes teaching at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland from 2012-2022 (appointed at age 21) , the prestigious Music School at Douglas Academy in Glasgow from 2016-2023 and the University of St Andrews Music Centre from 2017-2021. As a player, I have performed across the world, been described as ‘a guitarist of outstanding skill and originality’ (Classical Guitar) and 'dazzlingly virtuosic' (The Herald), and released 3 solo albums for Nimbus.
Having moved to London in 2020, I'm currently one of the two guitar teachers at the thriving music department of the North London Collegiate School. I also give weekly online classes on guitar technique, in addition to my **Contact Detail Removed** 'Technique Tips' videos.
Tutoring Experience:
Highlights
Lecturer in classical guitar at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland since 2013.
Guitar tutor at Douglas Academy Music School 2016-2023
Moved to London in 2020.
Taught all ages and abilities privately.
Given masterclasses at guitar festivals in South Korea, Germany, Czech Republic and Hungary
Tutoring Approach:
The approach differs from student to student. I teach people at all ages and abilities and find the most important thing is for the student to have a clear idea of what they want to achieve (excepting young children, of course, who need a different approach).
