Personal Description:
My name is Hugh Vincent, I am a pianist and composer based in Leeds UK.
I am classically trained with over 20 years experience playing the piano.
I studied Jazz Piano at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with a scolarship where I learned with some of the finest Jazz musicians in the country including Hans Koller (WDR Big Band) and Jean Toussaint (Art Blakey).
I play in a number of groups; most notably Ancient Infinity Orchestra (Gondwana Records) and Mu Quintet (DIRTH) and our music has found audiences across the world. I also formed an electronic duo 'Yard Nule' where I learned the art of music production, sound design and mixing. Yard Nule has been featured on 6 Music, Radio 3, BBC Introducing and Spotify Editorials as well as winning awards at Adelaide Fringe Festival 2023.
Over my career I have gained a lot of useful knowledge through experimentation, trial and error which I would love to share with students who have a passion for the piano, composition or improvisation and I believe that this passion can be nurtured at any abilty level.
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught the piano to people of all levels from child beginner to adult hobbyists, from conservatoire students to musicians who already have proffessional careers.
-Dozens of private students
-Junior Conservatoire students
-Community workshops / Vulnerable people
-Primary schools
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to teaching is centered around finding the music that the student loves!
The music that speaks to them most is the secret to unlocking their own musicality.
We will explore many types of music and develop strong foundations in rhythm, harmony, and melody.
Students will develop a curiosity about the workings of their favourite music and learn why it sounds good to them.
We will also develop a solid instrumental technique through excercises and pieces with techincal challenges.
We will work on sight reading and studying music closely.
I am happy to teach towards Graded exams if a student is keen to do so.
With regards to Jazz, I can teach:
-Composition
-Voicings
-Melodic Vocabulary
-Learning Standards
-Improvisation
-Rhythm Section Skills
-Scales, Arpeggios and Modes
