Personal Description:
I grew up in Liverpool and began to play flute at the age of 7, followed by violin and piano. As a teenager I studied at the Junior School of the Royal Northern College of Music, and by the age of 18 I had achieved Grade 8 on all three instruments. I studied music at the University of Cambridge (Gonville and Caius College), achieving BA Hons (2:1) and MA (Cantab) degrees. I went on to study for a postgraduate performance diploma in Flute at Trinity College of Music. After more than a decade of teaching experience (in London, Somerset and North Wales), I studied for a Masters in Music Therapy at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating with distinction. I work in Gwynedd as a freelance music therapist and music teacher.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching music for about 15 years, privately and peripatetically (in various schools and music centres). Between 2010 - 2014 I taught music (flute, violin, piano, guitar, music theory) in Somerset, both privately and within local schools as a peripatetic teacher. Between 2014-2017, I taught music in North Wales, working for the Gwasanaeth Ysgolion (schools' music service) William Mathias, and Canolfan Gerdd (music school) William Mathias (teaching in both Cymraeg (Welsh) and English). I continued to teach privately, part-time, while studying Music Therapy at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama between 2017 - 2019. I am currently teaching part-time alongside working as a freelance music therapist.
Tutoring Approach:
I have a pupil-centred approach, using a variety of teaching systems, styles and approaches to get the best out of each pupil. I draw on my 30 years of experience in playing and studying music, and my extensive knowledge of various teaching books and manuals, as well as using my own teaching materials. I am happy to prepare pupils for ABRSM exams if this is appropriate. I can teach classical music and techniques, or folk music and techniques, and I can also teach basic improvisation skills.
